40 Product-Focused Illustrations in 20 Days — Here's How I Did It

The brief
Hygraph was relaunching their website and needed a complete illustration system — fast. One cohesive brand, but three very different audiences to speak to: developers, marketers, and enterprise buyers. Plus an emerging AI segment.
The constraint: a tight timeline. The goal: a visual system that would work across every touchpoint.
40 illustrations. 20 days. No shortcuts.
Phase I — Research before pixels
Before I opened Figma, I asked one question: "What does each audience need to believe?"
That reframe changed everything. Instead of thinking about what to draw, I started thinking about what each illustration needed to communicate emotionally.
Developers needed to feel: "This actually works under the hood."
Marketers needed to feel: "This delivers measurable results."
Enterprise needed to feel: "This scales with our business."
AI segment needed to feel: "This is the future, today."
When you know what a person needs to believe, every visual decision has a reason behind it.
Phase II — Creative direction
Here's where most designers would start sketching abstract metaphors. I went the other direction. Instead of illustrating what Hygraph does, I showed what it looks like to use it.
The product UI became the art direction. Real product screenshots, treated with gradient backgrounds for depth and energy, strategic filters to make them feel polished without losing UI clarity, and contextual framing tailored to each audience segment.
The result? One round of approvals. Because when the direction is research-backed and clearly explained, clients can say yes with confidence.
Phase III — Building the system
With creative direction locked, I built the infrastructure that would let me produce 40 pieces without losing consistency:
Gradient Background System — 4 palettes, each mapped to a customer segment, so the visuals could signal audience without a single word.
Product Screenshot Framework — Defined capture rules, crop ratios, and focal points so every screenshot felt intentional, not grabbed.
Filter & Polish Presets — Consistent elevation treatment across all illustrations without flattening the UI details that make them credible.
Composition Grid — A system for where to place UI within the gradient space, so nothing felt random.
Export Templates — Light mode, dark mode, social, and web variants all ready to go.
Same visual DNA. Infinite applications. Every piece shares the system's language — but tells a different story.
What I learned
Quality at speed isn't luck — it's infrastructure.
The 20-day timeline wasn't brutal because of the system I built before touching a single illustration. The research phase felt like a delay at the time. It was actually the biggest time-saver.
